How each one works
A tank water heater keeps 40 to 50+ gallons hot around the clock, ready to use, and reheats it even when you're asleep or away. A tankless unit has no storage tank; it fires up and heats water instantly as it flows to your tap, then shuts off when you're done.
Side by side
| Factor | Tank | Tankless |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Hot water supply | Limited to tank size | Endless (within flow rate) |
| Energy use | Standby loss reheating stored water | Heats only on demand |
| Typical lifespan | 8 to 12 years | 20+ years |
| Space | Large floor footprint | Compact, wall-mounted |
| Best for | Lower upfront budget, simple swap | Endless hot water, long-term savings, space |
Upfront cost vs. long-term savings
A tank is cheaper to buy and install, which makes it the budget-friendly choice for a quick swap. A tankless costs more upfront but uses less energy (no standby loss) and lasts about twice as long, so over its lifetime the gap often narrows or reverses.
Hot-water capacity
A tank can run out during back-to-back showers; a tankless never "empties," but it's limited by its flow rate, the gallons per minute it can heat at once. Sizing matters: a busy household running showers, laundry, and the dishwasher simultaneously needs a properly sized unit (or more than one).
Lifespan & space
Tankless units last 20+ years versus 8 to 12 for a tank, and they mount on the wall to free up floor space. In both cases, annual maintenance, especially flushing in hard-water areas, protects the lifespan; our USA Savings Club covers it.
St. Louis home note
Winter inlet water is colder, so heaters work harder to reach the same set point. Busy households with back-to-back showers feel tank limits first. If you're replacing a leaking tank, read how tank water heaters work, then decide whether a like-for-like tank or a tankless upgrade fits how long you'll stay in the home.
Which is right for you?
Choose a tank for the lowest upfront cost and a straightforward replacement. Choose tankless for endless hot water, energy savings, a longer lifespan, and reclaimed space. We'll size and install whichever fits your home best.
