Sizing & airflow

BTU

British Thermal Unit, the standard measure of heating or cooling energy. One BTU is the energy needed to raise a pound of water one degree Fahrenheit; HVAC equipment is rated in BTUs per hour of output.

Why it matters for your home

BTUs are the currency of system sizing. A furnace might deliver 80,000 BTU/h; an AC's 'tons' translate to 12,000 BTU/h each. The number your home actually needs comes from a Manual J load calculation, and matching that number, not maxing it, is what keeps equipment efficient and comfortable.
