Efficiency ratings

SEER2

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2, the current U.S. rating for how efficiently an air conditioner or heat pump cools across a season. It replaced SEER in 2023 with a tougher test that simulates real ductwork, so the same unit scores slightly lower on SEER2 than old SEER.

Why it matters for your home

St. Louis summers put four-plus real months on your AC, so cooling efficiency shows up on your Ameren bill. The federal minimum for new ACs in Missouri is 14.3 SEER2; higher tiers cost more up front and less every summer. When comparing quotes, make sure both use SEER2, a 'SEER 16' from an old quote and a 'SEER2 15.2' can be the same machine.
