Sizing & airflow

Balance point

The outdoor temperature at which a heat pump's output exactly matches your home's heat loss, above it, the heat pump covers everything; below it, backup heat starts helping.

Why it matters for your home

The balance point is the key number in Missouri dual-fuel design: it's the temperature where your system switches from cheap heat-pump heating to gas backup. A well-designed system puts the switchover where the economics say, not where a default setting landed. If you have dual fuel and your gas furnace seems to run all winter, ask where your balance point is set.
