Heat exchanger

The sealed metal component inside a gas furnace where combustion heat transfers to the air blown through your ducts, keeping exhaust gases separate from the air you breathe.

Why it matters for your home

A cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide into your home's air, which is why it's one of the few failures where replacement is the honest answer almost every time. It's also why annual furnace inspections matter: the crack is found with an inspection camera, not from the thermostat. Ask to see the evidence before accepting the diagnosis, from us or anyone else.
