The simple version
Cold water enters the tank → a gas burner or electric elements heat the stored water → hot water leaves from the top when you open a tap → the thermostat calls for heat again as temperature drops. A temperature-and-pressure relief valve and anode rod are key safety and longevity parts.

What's inside the tank
- Storage tank: holds the ready supply of hot water.
- Heat source: gas burner with venting, or electric heating elements.
- Thermostat / controls: keep water near your set temperature.
- Dip tube: sends incoming cold water toward the bottom so hot water isn't diluted at the outlet.
- Anode rod: helps protect the tank from corrosion over time.
Recovery and “running out”
Recovery rate is how quickly the heater reheats after heavy use. Back-to-back showers, laundry, and dishwashing can outpace a small tank. If your household regularly runs out, solutions range from a larger tank to a tankless (on-demand) water heater sized for simultaneous fixtures.

Cold inlet water in winter makes the heater work harder to reach the same set point. Sediment and hard-water scale also reduce efficiency over time. Annual attention, and knowing the age of the tank, prevents many emergency no-hot-water mornings.
Repair vs. replace
Storage tanks often last about 8 to 12 years. Leaks at the tank body usually mean replacement; a failed element, thermostat, or anode may be repairable on a younger unit.
