Evaporator coil

The indoor coil (usually above your furnace) where refrigerant absorbs heat and moisture from your home's air. Its partner, the condenser coil outside, releases that heat outdoors.

Why it matters for your home

The evaporator coil is why 'just replace the outside unit' is usually bad advice: indoor and outdoor coils are engineered as a matched pair, and new R-454B condensers can't run on old R-410A coils. It's also a common hidden culprit, a dirty or frozen coil looks exactly like a broken AC from the thermostat's point of view.
